Trying Ardell’s Magnetic Accent Lashes

Magnetic lashes have become the new challenge for beauty gurus everywhere. We’re all searching to find ways to make these glue free lashes work. But it’s a battle. Keep reading to see the carnage firsthand.

I decided to try the accent lashes, because they appeared to be a little more effective than the full strip.

Mag Lashes (2)

The lashes come on a tray, which marks the top and bottom lash and left and right. I found you could mix up the top and bottom lashes (but don’t go mixing up left and right). The tray has a lid so you can store the lashes. But there is some holes and stickiness which are used to hold the lashes initially. But this did result in a few of the individual lashes being bent or damaged.

Mag Lashes (1)

The first time I tried them (with no mascara on) the top lash wouldn’t even stay up long enough to put the bottom lash on.

After lots of lash dropping and putting some mascara on, I had my first bit of success. The magnetic lashes were on. But they weren’t all that close to the lash line.

Mag Lashes (8)

A bit more practice and I got them perfect on one side but not the other. The lashes did not want to contour to my lash line, even though I was using the magnets on both ends before I clipped the magnet in the middle. I also occasionally got a little bit of my own lashes caught. Which while not painful, wasn’t quite the idea either. Although it did result to the lashes being close to the lash line.

Mag Lashes (7)

I then tried holding the bottom lash in place then putting the top lash on. This created the best look, but the sides still weren’t as close to the lash line as I would have liked. Doing it this way, also increasing the risk of accidentally hitting your eyeball.

Mag Lashes (4)

At this stage I am concluding that glue is still my friend, but I will be keeping an eye out for future improvements.

Update: I recently tried Ardell’s full length lashes and the magnetic lash tool, they take a lot of fiddling and still don’t sit that close the the lash line. The accents however, I am able to wear daily, but they don’t contour to the lash line, which makes then still not look quite right sometimes, but close enough you can get away with them.

Is Amazon Smile Worth Smiling About?

Amazon has started a new initiative called Amazon Smile. When shoppers shop on smile.amazon.com instead of amazon.com, 0.5% of the price of the item they are purchasing will be donated to their chosen charity.

There are several charities to choose from. Amazon spotlights a few major ones, but you can also search for others. There is no alphabetized list to look at, but searching a keyword of interest such as ‘cancer’ or ‘kids’ will likely bring up most charities that support your chosen area of interest.

The site uses a separate URL which Amazon makes a vague mention towards being because it is not advertising funded. However, murmurs on the internet suggest the separate URL makes shoppers less likely to remember to shop on it, thus saving Amazon money while projecting a socially conscious image. Others have also suggested it is a move to counteract how many people search Amazon through Google and instead require people to use Amazon’s search engine.

Predictions: Will Harry and Meghan last?

1516909803-meghan-and-harryMeghan Markle is set to join the royal family on May 19. But questions have been raised about how long this marriage will last. Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are children of divorce and controversy surrounds Markle’s relationship with her family.

Last year Markle spend Christmas with the royal family and her fiancée was quoted saying that they were the family Markle never had. Markle’s brother however has said Markle was close to her family until she became famous. Her brother Thomas Markle, has further penned a letter to Prince Harry, blaming Meghan Markle for her father’s bankruptcy and expressing disgust that her family weren’t invited to her wedding. Other sources have suggested that Markle’s parents will be in attendance.

This union will also partially make history with Markle being common and American. But many have said that this union is just what the royal family needs to show they are part of the twenty first century. And one would think, if it’s defying tradition, surely, they must be marrying for love. But only time will truly tell.

Seeing Lady Liberty in the Flesh

A trip to New York is not complete without seeing the Statue of Liberty. But what is the best way to see this iconic monument?

IMG_3142I personally, think the best way to see it is up close and personally. But the only way you can do this is via a trip with Statue Cruises. Onsite, Statue Cruises are incredibly and lack customer service skills. The lines are long (3+ hours at the height of the season). Booking your tickets online will save you getting in line for tickets and may allow you to go up in the Statue where tickets are very limited.

After waiting in line for the boat for a rather long time. You will go through a security screening. They want people to remove hats, scarves, gloves etc. So expect to strip half your layers in winter.

The boats themselves are designed to have nearly everyone standing, with rails on the sides and hand holds from the ceiling. The windows provide an excellent view, but could benefit from being cleaned.IMG_3167

You arrive at the back of the statue, where there is a souvenir shop, toilets and a place to eat and drink. Following the path around to the front of the statue gives you a great view of both the statue and the end of Manhattan.

If this doesn’t sound like you, the Staten Island Ferry provides a free boat ride and passes by the Statue of Liberty and tour boats also pass by the statue. But Statue Cruises is the only one that will allow you to get up close and personal with the statue.

Happy Travels.

Kat Von D Glimmer Veil Review

I love a good lipstick. But I did not love liquid lipstick until I came across Kat Von D’s Glimmer Veil at Sephora.

televatorIt comes in pretty gothic packaging and the tube reflects the product inside. The wand has a tapered end for easy application. And it can be used as a shimmering top coat or as a full impact lipstick.

I have it in the shade Televator at the moment. But I’m sure my collection will grow. It sparkles, it stays in place, it’s long wearing and just plain gorgeous. Every time I wear my Glimmer Veil lipstick I get at least one compliment on it.

I tried NYX’s Cosmic Metal Lip Cream as a cheaper dupe. The color was similar and it looked similar. But it was tacky, didn’t dry and while long wearing in a way, half of it was caught on what you were eating and drinking.

So while more expensive, Glimmer Veil is the answer for me. Plus it’s cruelty and paraben free.

Halo Beauty – First Thoughts

If you’re into beauty and watch YouTube, you’ve probably heard of beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook aka the GlamLifeGuru.

image-tati2_1020x700.pngShe has just released her beauty brand Halo Beauty, which so far has one product a vitamin for skin hair and nails. It sounds great and it’s both sugar and gluten free as well as vegan. She’s also been fairly transparent about the ingredients.

However a lot of bloggers, vloggers and others have been really negative about her brand and ingredients. I am surprised that her brand is so far just one product, but when you look at the product it looks fairly decent and people haven’t even used it yet to comment.

home-product2_1020x700.pngLooking at the ingredients and people’s concerns about things they do or don’t do and potential ill health you could get, there has been nothing more than a few suggested correlations. And the thing with correlations is that the two variables appear to be related but may both be occurring for non-related reasons. While I don’t think this product will be a miracle, I don’t think it will be any less effective than all the anti-aging creams out there and the companies for those don’t have to disable comments due to negativity and personal attacks.

It will be interesting to see how effective the product is once it is used for a period of time and how it affects Tati’s perceived integrity.

Viewing Platforms In New York (Manhattan)

It’s been a while, I’ve been doing some exploring around the globe and spending more time writing content for other people than myself, but hopefully in this new year, I’ll be able to share all the latest with you.

Recently, I spent a fair bit of time in New York City and over the next little while I will give you all my tips and tricks to seeing New York. First, I’ll start off by talking about the different viewing platforms.

Empire State Building

If you’ve ever seen Sleepless in Seattle, you’ll have seen a sneak preview of what it is like up in the Empire State Building. But unless you’re first in the morning or there last thing at night like they were, it probably won’t be so empty. But that is ok, because with so many other attractions you have to line up for ages so you want to be there first thing in the morning. But with the Empire State Building, what really impressed me was their crowd control. When we went first thing in the morning, it was fairly quick to get in. When we went in the afternoon, the line was hallway around the bottom of the building. Yet the line moved quickly and there was a lot of staff making sure things were orderly and being available to provide information. They also kept spaces near doors clear for those going to other places. Then inside there was more moving through the line, going through security scanning and then finally up to the first inside viewing platform. But again the line did keep moving. The inside viewing platform is particularly great in winter (the time I was there) as it is warm. That is on the 80th floor. You can then either take the lift or the stairs up to the 86th floor to the outside viewing platform where they also have the famous binoculars. For a keen photographer like me this was the best place to get photos through the fencing. But going up there at night in winter like we did was pretty chilly. Both viewing platforms offer a good view of the city and particularly of the Freedom Tower.

IMG_3064

One World Observatory (Freedom Tower)

We had to check out One World as it was the newest, the tallest and offered a Winter Wonderland experience. The Winter Wonderland experience was a quick animation in the lift about how New York’s skyline has changed and virtual frosted windows which didn’t work the day we were there. For One World you have to line outside in the freezing cold with a line that doesn’t seen to move (especially if you’re in the voucher line like we were). There is one staff member on waving people through, a lack of information available and did I mention cold? Once you get inside to buy your tickets you can’t go straight up like you did in Empire, you have to come back at a certain time (so I’d recommend buying your tickets online for a set time if you can then just showing up 20 minutes before that time). Out the other side of the Freedom Tower is the Westfield mall and it is in here by the Subway that you line up at your time. It also means you can fill in time there out of the cold in winter until your timeslot. Lining up, the staff weren’t particularly helpful and got annoyed if people lined up too early. Once inside, you are taken up in a lift to floor 102 then run through a couple of presentations before you get to the viewing platform. The viewing platform is inside and at night very reflective. They also ran other presentation up on the viewing platform that you could choose to listen to which was very informative. The view here is the best of the bridges such as the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River. You can also dine up there with a panoramic view.

IMG_3527.JPGTop Of The Rock

We choose not to do this platform in the end because it was near the Empire State Building, but it is best to do during the day as it offers a great view of Central Park. You can also see the classic Empire State Building. It looked like more of the lining up was done inside so it may also be a better winter venue.

So if you’re going to New York, these are all good spots to see the city from, but if I had to pick one, I’d definitely pick Empire State Building.
